Dear Athletic Director Yow:
My boyfriend and I have been together for about six years. He has his good points, but he’s inconsistent in his affections and I’m not sure he’s totally committed to me. Should I get rid of him?
–Torn
Dear Torn:
Give it time. You mentioned his good points. Focus exclusively on those and ignore the bad!
Dear Athletic Director Yow:
Thanks for the advice, but I forgot to mention my boyfriend is not great with the kids. He kind of lets them do whatever they want and tells them “great job” even when they act like complete knuckleheads and don’t try real hard.
–Torn
Dear Torn:
Hope springs eternal! His positive energy and constant complimenting will turn those kids around in no time.
Dear Athletic Director Yow:
Great, but he also makes excuses for them constantly and never points out that their flaws might be the basis for their screwups. (I dated a guy, “Dave,” who did the opposite. He blamed everything on his kids and never took any responsibility himself. Help!)
–Torn
Dear Torn:
You sure can pick ’em! OK, you might want to have some firm talks with your boyfriend. Maybe give him some parameters; let him know there are other fish in the sea.
Dear Athletic Director Yow:
So he just set fire to the dumpster at the back of our property while he was throwing away coals from the grill. We literally have a dumpster fire on our hands.
–Torn
Dear Torn:
OK, dump him.
